Meet the Great Satisfier, the Holy Spirit

MEET THE SATISFIER, THE HOLY SPIRIT Remember that little song… I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart Where? Down in my heart! Where? Down in my heart! I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart Down in my heart to stay And I'm so happy So very happy I've got the love of Jesus in my heart Down in my heart And I'm so happy So very happy I've got the love of Jesus in my heart. THIS MORNING WE WILL DISCUSS HOW TO BE FULLY AND FOREVER SATISFIED John 4:14 (ESV) but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Jesus Engages the Woman at the Well Jesus and his disciples had been walking all day, from dawn until about the sixth hour, (6pm). Jesus stopped and rested near the well at Sychar. The disciples went on to get some food. Dusty, tires, hungry, Jesus set down by the well. Jesus saw a women coming and when she got close enough he said, give me to drink. She insults him by saying “Why do you a Jew, ask me a Samaritan for water?  John 4:11 (ESV) The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Then Jesus pointed down into that well, at which so many generations of men and livestock had satisfied their thirst, and Jesus said: Everyone that drinks of this water will thirst again! This is true of every earthly fountain of satisfaction or joy. No matter how deeply you drink, you soon thirst again.  Wealth  Worldly fame or power  Worldly pleasure  Human knowledge  Fountain of science, literature, philosophy  Human love  Sex  Ecstatic drugs Not one of these fully satisfies; neither do they satisfy for very long. Then our Lord added the words from our text: John 4:14 (ESV) but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” DRINK AND KEEP ON DRINKING OF THE WATER THE LORD JESUS GIVES AND YOU WILL BE FULLY AND FOREVER SATISFIED! But what is the water that our Lord Jesus gives? The commentaries give a great many answers to this question, but I believe Jesus provided the answer in His own words. John 7:37-39 (ESV) On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. THE WATER WHICH JESUS CHRIST GIVES IS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND IT FLOWS FROM OUR HEART.  To Know This Water and to Drink of it, You Must Be Thirsty, and You must come to Jesus (IMPORTANCE OF ASKING)  John 4:10 (ESV) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”  Luke 11:13 (ESV) If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Anyone who really receives the Holy Spirit as an indwelling presence will be fully and forever satisfied, and that is the only way to be fully and forever satisfied. It is a great thing to have your source of satisfaction and joy within yourself. To Have JOY…  Not in your environment  Not in circumstances  Not in your possessions To Have a Fountain Of Joy Within Your Own Heart!... This Supernatural Life that Christ wants us to live is a life that is not conditioned upon our circumstances, our possessions, our friends, even our family. A NATURAL LIFE IS A CONDITIONAL LIFE.  When circumstances are going great, we are going great.  When our environment is pleasant, we are pleasant.  When our possessions are going great, we are doing great. But when something goes wrong with our job our health, our family, our marriage, our possessions, we tend to get miserable. OUR ‘STUFF’ EFFECTS OUR ‘STUFFING’ You feel great when you are walking around with a couple hundred bucks that you can spend any way you want. But do you feel just as great when you are knee deep in debt and you don’t know how you are going to buy groceries, or pay your utility bill, or even make a rent or house payment? You feel great when you get a new car or boat, but do you feel just as great when you wreck it, or it is stolen or damaged? You feel great when your house is increasing in value and your assets are growing at a 15-20% clip, but do you feel just as great when you are underwater in your house and your assets are worth less than when you invested? You feel great when your kids are doing well, your spouse and you are getting along great, but do you feel just as great when a son or daughter does something terribly wrong or does something to bring shame on your family. What about when your spouse announces they are leaving you. MY FRIEND CALLED His wife left him. He said it was over for good this time. He opened his heart to me over the next 30 minutes. How things had gotten worse. Money had always been a struggle for them, but they had started ‘letting some steam off’ by going to a local bar and hanging out, and dancing. Then his wife started ‘grinding’ with other guys. He even observed her flirting with some other men. Then she started going out with some girl friends. She would sometimes come home early the next morning. Fights became more frequent. Always over money and career choices. Finally, she left him. He said it was for good. He had never seen her this way. She even broke into the house and took furniture. After he had calmed down a bit, and told me he was starting to go back to church, I said, David, I don’t know what you want me to say, but here is what I need to say. Going to church is not going to make a difference. Your problem is that you have forgotten God. Jeremiah 2:23 says we sin against God in two ways-we forget Him, and then we make our own cisterns, cisterns that end up having holes in them. You have a business that you have left God out of. You have left him out of your life, and now you see all the holes. You need to get to the point where you need God so much that not everything in this world matters as much as He does. Your marriage, your business, everything you think you need to be happy, you tell God you will give it all to Him because you need Him more than anything in this world. Then, do not make it your purpose to get your family back together, but make it your purpose to get your relationship with Jesus Christ back together. You give your wife to God, and let God do with her as He wants to. Always bring God into your problems. In fact, put God between you and your problems and then ask Him to be glorified! He shared with me how just hours before, at two in the morning, he had gone outside and cried out to God at the top of His lungs. He had screamed and taken out his frustrations on the God of creation. He had emptied his heart out to a God that he saw as punishing him. I said ______, God does not punish you, he wants you to become like his Son, for you are his son. Everything that happens in your life is either a stumbling block, or a stepping stone. God wants this to be your stepping stone to a closer, fulfilling relationship with him. Most Christians have a Maaco Christianity. Every time things go bad we say, “Uh oh, better get Maaco”, uh, God. We call on God when we cannot handle things. However, God wants to handle ALL OUR THINGS! He wants to be our very LIFE! R A TORREY LOSES HIS 9 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER ELIZABETH Dr. Torrey and his wife watched their nine year old daughter, Elizabeth, die of diphtheria. The health officials came in and ordered an immediate burial. Her brother and sisters had to watch from across the street while they gathered the body and took her immediately to the cemetery. No one was allowed at the burial except Mr. and Mrs. Torrey. They carried her little body down the street in a pouring rain storm. A grave had been hastily dug, and a simple box casket was waiting. They laid her body in the box and lowered it into the grave. Mrs. Torrey turned to her husband and said “Archie, I am so glad that Elizabeth is not in that box!” That night they had to sleep in a strange hotel while their house was fumigated. RA TORREY was up all night long because of a horrible thunderstorm and the stress of the day. The next day he was exhausted and as he walked to the Bible Institute to teach his classes, he stopped and cried “Oh Elizabeth! Elizabeth.” Dr. Torrey then describes in his own words what happened: “And just then this fountain, the Holy Spirit, that I had in my heart, broke forth with such power as I think I had never experienced before, and it was the most joyful moment I had ever known in my life. Oh, how wonderful is the joy of the Holy Spirit! It is an unspeakably glorious thing to have your joy not in things about you, not even in your most dearly loved friends, but to have within you a fountain ever springing up, springing up, springing up, always springing up, three hundred and sixty-five days in every year, springing up under all circumstances into everlasting life” No matter how much he mourned his daughter, the joy of the Lord was the most compelling force within him---a fountain springing up, even amidst tragedy, to eternal life. The one who has the Spirit of God dwelling within as a well springing up into everlasting life is independent of the world's pleasures, independent of circumstances, independent of environment. John 16:20-22 (NIV) You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY YOUR JOY  We Have a Rock with a flowing fountain that follows us 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 (ESV) For I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed [akoloutheō)-to accompany, to follow as a disciple] them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.  David echoes the Rock of Exodus: -"He split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. He brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers. ... Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide meat for His people? ... And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer." Psalm 78:15-16,20,35 -Echoing Moses in Deut 32:13, David says: "But I would feed you with the finest of the wheat, And with honey from the rock I would satisfy you." Psalm 81:16 -"He opened the rock and water flowed out; It ran in the dry places like a river." Psalm 105:41 -"Who turned the rock into a pool of water, The flint into a fountain of water." Psalm 114:8  Isaiah Knew The Rock: "Trust in the Lord forever, For in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock." Isaiah 26:4  Nehemiah refers to the Exodus rock: "You provided bread from heaven for them for their hunger, You brought forth water from a rock for them for their thirst, And You told them to enter in order to possess The land which You swore to give them." Nehemiah 9:15 Have You Experienced this Living Water from the Rock! I am not talking about your salvation experience. I am talking about a supernatural life that comes from being fully satisfied regardless of your circumstances. I am talking about the Living Water of the Holy Spirit, the water that always satisfies! I first experienced this Living Water July 30, 1971. It was Friday, and I was counting little parts for inventory at my Dad’s hydraulic fittings business. I had been gone Mon-Thurs to a Youth Conference at High Street Baptist Church in Springfield. God had led me there to find answers for the direction my life was to take. I was already enrolled at Washburn, already planning to be a lawyer, but something was off. I had come to a Crisis point in my life, caused by a small voice coming from God. Tuesday night, when the invitation was given by Dr Elmer Towns, I went forward, and before an altar worker could get to me, I knelt and prayed a simple, yet crisis-driven prayer. I gave everything to God. All my plans, all me desires, all my future, all my life. I simply had to have all of Him! I had to have Him have all of me! Friday began like any day. One two three I began counting parts. Something happened mid-morning. My emotions just started going haywire, and thoughts of God and His son were flooding my heart and mind. I just started crying. I cried and cried. Luckily, my dad was gone, and I was able to hide among the parts bins. I counted through my tears. As I cried, I just sensed God’s presence, and even more, I sensed that God wanted to use me to proclaim the Gospel. For three hours, God dealt with my heart, and when I said yes, my heart was overwhelmed with such joy that the tears flowed freely. Within three weeks, I was on the road to Springfield to attend Baptist Bible College. This Living Water Is Always There January 10th I was driving up Highway 13 for a court appearance in Butler, MO. I had to answer for a ticket I received for driving 100 miles per hour. I was running late, the weather was a real misty fog and you could not see 100 feet in front of you. The highway was slick. I tried to pass a slow moving car only to see big headlights coming at me. Swerving back I lost control, swerved back into the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer rig, and was hit head on. The crash spun me around several times, and another car crashed into the rear of my 71 Duster. I was knocked out. I woke up and a Sheriff was breaking a window so he could get me out of the car. I had a small cut on my knee, a bump on my head, but otherwise was not hurt. I did not go to the hospital. The sheriff looked at me and said "son, you should have died". I looked at my beloved car, knelt on the ground and worshipped God. I was overwhelmed with a sense of His presence, and joy was flooding my heart. Over the next four months, while my Dad made me go without a car, I read the entire Bible through two and a half times, and received such wonderful truth from God’s Word! The Living Water Overcomes the Darkest Moments Let me tell you how I know this living water is present even in the darkest grief. BBC was a three-year preacher boy Bible College. They had a fourth year but most people only went three. The Senior Class President was a big deal. It meant you would get a good job at a big church. In the 23 years of our history, it had always been a married student who was elected. I was asked to run, and did, not thinking my chances were very good. To my surprise, I was elected, and it seemed from that day the married students were out to get me. I was watched like a hawk by the Security guards. Well, sure enough, after one silly run in I was put on notice. Then a second incident happened in which the head of security lied about what he had clearly given me permission to do. Therefore, I was called in to the DC and was told that they were calling a special assembly of the 700 or so seniors, and I had to resign as Class President. Later that week, I stood in front to my friends and classmates, and I resigned. My statement was without blame, but simple and to the point. I immediately left and went to my room. Emotions were flooding over me. But these were not emotions of joy, but emotions of grief. I went to my dorm room, and crawled into our little prayer closet, and cried my heart out before God for the next two hours. I absolutely thought my desire to serve God was over. I cried, I might have cussed, I was angry I wanted God to rain fire from heaven. However, as I prayed I slowly felt God’s loving arms gathering me up. Suddenly all that anger, hurt, and grief melted away and I had such a sense of God’s presence that I could only rejoice. When I stepped out of that tiny prayer closet, my eyes were red, but I was floating as I walked. The Living Water had sprung up in my heart and washed all the grief and hurt away! The Well of Living Water can be Choked Off. When my younger brothers fired me from Tompkins Industries, and voted me out as President, once again it seemed that everything important in my life had been stripped away. This time the resentment turned into bitterness. II was away from the Lord, even though by all appearances I was a great Christian. I was a deacon at Emmanuel Baptist, I taught a large Sunday School class. But my priorities were all out of whack and I was running my life my way. All of a sudden, I was faced with terrible rumors from my brothers and a consultant who was secretly trying to take over the business. My bitterness came largely from my Dad’s lack of action. He said nothing at the meeting in which they voted my out. He never tried to reach out to me, and he never tried to get the brothers together to see if there was a solution. It was as if he had thrown me into the water to drown. This after 15 years of working my heart out for him and his business. I felt betrayed, and abandoned. There was no Living Water this time. The truth is that sometimes we do things to choke the well. I had given everything to God when I was 18, but now at the age of 35, I had made some choices that put me first. My business had become my life, not God. The business came before my wife and children. Somehow, through selfish and wrong choices, my life had changed from being about God and what He wanted, into being about me and what I thought was important, what I wanted. I was choking this supply of Living Water. It was still there, but it trickled out a drip or two at a time. God still wanted me, still had me, but He wanted to get good mileage from the problems I was encountering. He used the problems to turn my heart back to my wife and to my children. He got my brothers and I back to where we could at least communicate. We started getting together as a family. Mom, Dad, and I were communicating. God led me to start an asphalt paving business. But he made it very clear from the onset that it was only so I could pay the bills. It was not something that was going to last. My children would not take it over. My business was starting to take off in 1994. My first year (91) we did 284,000 and ended the year with only 15k to start up the next season. In 1994 we did just over 1.2 million. I now had more money than I needed for just bills. My Mom and Dad came up that summer, and I remember my Dad driving and just watching as we were doing a big job at Ward Parkway Shopping Center. I remember seeing a look that I rarely saw, a look of pride, a look of satisfaction as he looked on and observed me directing the crews, overseeing the work. The next time I saw Dad he and Mom came up in February of 2005 to watch our kids while Lydia and I went on a cruise. I felt bad because Dad was very sick. He just laid around. Doctors couldn’t figure out what it was. We got back and Mom and Dad went home to Destin. Dad passed away March 26, 1995. I was in shock, as well as my Mom and brothers and sister. At the funeral God spoke to me and in that unmistakable still small voice said Jim, it’s time to do what I called you to do. A few weeks later, I drove down to Destin to go through Dad’s things. The other kids had already laid claim, but I wanted to see if he had left anything for me. Mom was in Overland Park, looking for a place to live. I had been so busy with the start up of a new season, that I had not had time to grieve. So when I got to their home, I had my cry time before the throne. Once again, I was on my knees confessing my screw-up’s before God, begging Him for another chance to serve Him. The business was great, the money great, but my heart ached to be a faithful servant to God. I did not know how, but I wanted to serve in the Ministry, to follow that calling I had answered when I was eighteen. As I was going through Dad’s things, still aching from his death, aching from our strained relationship that traced back to 1988, aching from my lack of forgiveness to Dad for not stepping in and stopping what my brothers did. I found a Father’s Day card that was meant for me, but Dad had never given me. Inside there was a note that I now have framed, and which could only have been written for Father’s Day 1994. Here is what my Dad wrote: Jim I didn’t write anything in your Birthday card, but on Father’s Day I wanted to ask God to give you a special blessing. These past few years I wanted to pick you up as I did when you were a little boy and tell you how much I love you, because I know you have been through so much., and I know God has made you a much stronger man, husband and father through all of it. So I’m praying to God as the sun turns your skin bronze, may your heart be turned to God and your family and may He bless you with a good name, a good business, good health and your needs met in abundance. Love, Dad When I read his note, I just broke down. I understood why Dad did not do anything. He knew God was using everything to change me, prepare me, and make me the man I needed to be. I forgave my Dad immediately, asked God to forgive me of my selfishness and my sinfulness. At that point, it just seemed like the Holy Spirit poured out buckets and buckets of joy on my heart. I cried and cried and cried. The joy of the living water was flowing again. God continued to bless my work, but I had to bury my Mom the next year. However, this time the joy kept coming. I started filling in at churches, and then a small church in Edgerton called me. God brought a buyer for my Paving Company, led me here to Belton, but through it all, the Rock from which the Living Water flows has kept following me. I have heard many a Pastor talk about ‘war’ stories. They are not about the devil, but about people in their church. Sure, the ministry has its problems, but so does any occupation. All I know is that if I take any problem I’m facing to the throne, and I ask God to take over that problem, or at least be in charge of it and what I do, this joy, this living water will soon overwhelm me. Sure, I get upset sometimes, but I go to the fountain, I allow the Holy Spirit to take over, and in return, He gives me such joy. Sometimes I will be driving, or in my office, and even while I am thinking about a situation or problem, floods of joy will come over me. Sometime in prayer, I will just start bawling tears of joy. UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BEING THE GREAT SATISFIER Paul prayed a very special Prayer for you and me: “Ephesians 3:16-19 (NASB) that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. 1. For Christ to dwell in our hearts. The word translated “dwell” in this passage is a very strong word. It means literally, “to dwell down”, “to settle”, “and to dwell deep”. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to form the living Christ within us, dwelling deep down in the deepest depths of our being. We have already seen that this was a part of the significance of the name sometimes used of the Holy Spirit, “the Spirit of Christ”. In But God does not demand of us the impossible, He does not demand of us that we imitate Christ in our own strength. He offers to us something infinitely better; He offers to form Christ in us by the power of His Holy Spirit. And when Christ is thus formed in us by the Holy Spirit's power, all we have to do is to let this indwelling Christ live out His own life in us, and then we shall be like Christ without struggle and effort of our own. 2. For us to be rooted and grounded in love Paul tells us that by the strengthening of the Spirit in the inward man we send the roots of our life down deep into the soil of love and also that the foundations of the superstructure of our character are built upon the rock of love. 3. For us to Comprehend the Love of Christ - breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which passed knowledge. It is so broad, so long, so high, so deep, that no one can comprehend it. But we can “apprehend” it, we can lay hold upon it; we can make it our own; we can hold it before us as the object of our meditation, our wonder, and our joy. 4. For us to be “filled to all the fullness of God”. To be filled with all the fullness of God would not be so wonderful, for it is an easy matter to fill a pint cup with all the fullness of the ocean, a single dip will do it. The Holy Spirit expands our love to know the very fullness of God! Instead of our experiences chipping away at our soul until we are diminished and wearied, our soul is strengthened and enlarged to the very fullness of God! It is seemingly a more impossible task that the Holy Spirit undertakes to do for us, to fill us “unto all the fullness” of the infinite God. The Holy Spirit day by day puts His hand, as it were, into the fullness of God and puts it into us, and this wonderful process goes on day after day and week after week and month after month, and year after year, and never ends until we are “filled unto all the fullness of God.” WHY DO SO MANY CHRISTIANS STRUGGLE?  Because they have never really received the Holy Spirit as an indwelling fountain of life and joy and satisfaction;  Or else the fountain has become choked. Do you really thirst for the satisfaction that only Jesus Christ can bring? Have you come to Him, laid everything at His feet, and asked to drink His Living Water? Perhaps your priorities have changed, and all this stuff has become more important to you. Or perhaps you have let bitterness into your life over unforgiveness toward someone. Perhaps even toward God. Ask God to show you what is stopping His fountain from welling up in your life. Promise Him that if He will show you, you will give it up; you will do what you must do to remove whatever is stopping the flow of the Living Water. Acts 5:32 (NASB) "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him”. Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

11. Because of the Cross...We Have Jesus

Because of the Cross...We Have Jesus

A young boy once accompanied his mother to worship. During the sermon, the boy was listening very attentively to the lesson that day. The preacher's sermon on the crucifixion of Christ was so moving that the boy began to weep. Soon he began to cry aloud. His mother became so embarrassed that she whispered to him, "Don't take it so seriously." Oh, that we would take the cross more seriously.  If we take the Cross from the Bible, we have no Bible.  If we take the Cross from God, we have no God.  If we take the Cross from Jesus, we have no Savior.  If we take the Cross from our lives, we have no Salvation. The phrase “Because of the Cross” will be on our hearts and minds for the next several weeks. We will discover the wisdom of God in a way that will empower our Christian walk and bring revival to our heart and soul and church. This morning we want to lay the Foundation of the Cross: “Because of the Cross…we have Jesus.” When Jesus was on the Cross, suspended between God and man, the Bible records something the jeering crowds said to Jesus: Mark 15:29-30 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” Not only did they tell Jesus to save himself, they also said: Matthew 27:42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. The crowd was calling for Jesus to come down from the Cross. They said “save yourself” and we will believe in you. This is the choice that has confronted mankind since Adam and Eve. Do we trust in God for our salvation? Or do we trust in our own efforts and seek to save ourselves. Jumping off the Cross was not the miracle that Jesus was going to use to save mankind or himself. The Cross had a work to do in His life, and it has a work to do in our life. As we discover all that is available to us “Because of the Cross…” we will come to cherish its work in our lives, just as Jesus realized what it was working in His life. The Cross was not incidental to Jesus Christ. It was no “book-end” to His great teachings. He was not a “martyr” for his cause. The Cross defined everything about Jesus Christ. Because of the Cross…we have Jesus. We will look at three major aspects of Jesus’ life here on Earth, and we will see how each one is defined by the Cross. We Will Look At His Mission, His Message And His Ministry. A. The Mission of Jesus is defined by the Cross. It was a 99-degree September day in San Antonio, when a 10-month-old baby girl was accidentally locked inside a parked car by her aunt. Frantically the mother and aunt ran around the auto in near hysteria, while a neighbor attempted to unlock the car with a clothes hanger. Soon the infant was turning purple and had foam on her mouth. It had become a life-or-death situation when Fred Arriola, a wrecker driver, arrived on the scene. He grabbed a hammer and smashed the back window of the car to set her free. Was he heralded a hero? Arriola reported, "The lady was mad at me because I broke the window." "I just thought, What's more important--the baby or the window?" This world scoffs at the Cross as if it was no big deal. They are like the mom who is more concerned about her car than the baby. They see the Cross as some aberrant part of Jesus life, but ignore the impact the Cross has upon the way we live. To Jesus, the Cross defined His very purpose for coming to the Earth. The Cross defined His very mission. Philippians 2:7-8 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Indeed, when the time appointed approached, Jesus set His face like a flint: Luke 9:51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. This is a reference to a prophecy in Isaiah: Isaiah 50:7 But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. As hard as the hearts of men are toward God, so was Jesus determined with every strand of His DNA to go to the Cross! Ezekiel 3:8-9 Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces, and your forehead as hard as their foreheads. Like emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house.” B. The Message of Jesus is defined by the Cross We often associate the Message of Jesus with John 3:3 or John 3:16 John 3:3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Actually, the Message of Jesus was demonstrated in actions rather than words: 1 Peter 2:21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. We can see this is true because of this COMMON THEME in His preaching:  Matthew 10:38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.  Mark 8:34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.  Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  Luke 14:27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. As we look at the Gospels of Matthew Mark and Luke and ask, "What is the message of Jesus Christ?" The Cross is the defining message of Jesus. NOT ONLY DID THE CROSS SECURE OUR FORGIVENESS FROM SIN, BUT THE CROSS IS THE BASIS OF OUR FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER. NOT ONLY DID THE CROSS ENABLE OUR NEW BIRTH, BUT THE CROSS ENABLES US TO FOLLOW AND SERVE JESUS. THE CROSS IS THE BASIS OF OUR LIVING AS A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST. The Cross is in the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:3-11 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. “ Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  Take away the Cross and there is no poor in spirit, only pride  Take away the Cross and there is no mourning over sin.  Take away the Cross and there is no meekness.  Take away the Cross and there is no Righteousness of God available.  Take away the Cross and there is no mercy.  Take away the Cross and there is no way to be pure in heart.  Take away the Cross and there is no possibility of peace.  Take away the Cross and there is no persecution for Righteousness sake. Look at any message or command of Jesus Christ and it becomes meaningless without the Cross. C. The Ministry of Jesus is Defined by the Cross "Let a man preach with the greatest ability and zeal everything in the Bible but the Cross, he shall, as to the great end of preaching, preach in vain. While, on the other hand, the honest preaching of the Cross - though in great weakness, and even when accompanied with great deficiencies as to a full declaration of the counsel of God on some other subject - has usually been accompanied with the divine blessing. The leading object of the preacher should be to keep the mind and the heart of his hearers steadily fixed on Christ Jesus - Christ Jesus crucified ." (Scottish preacher & commentator John Brown) Most ministries today seek the glory of man. The emphasis is on production, media, and ratings. Ministry has become “professional.” Ministries today say, “Look how great our _____________ is.” It can be numbers, the facilities, the preacher, the TV ministry, radio. Ministry in America is corrupted by a man-centered view of effectiveness. In the meantime, our Nation is not impacted for righteousness. We are not producing “fruits meet for repentance.” Pride in ourselves and our accomplishments will always interfere with enjoying the Righteousness of God! Luke 3:8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. You visit third world countries where the Gospel is spreading and people are coming to Jesus, they do not put money into facilities, they do not brag about numbers, they give glory to God for what He is doing, and then they add there is still so much to do. They do not have much money, they do not have anything to boast in, but they have Jesus! Jesus revealed His ministry strategy in John 12 verse 23: John 12:23-26 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.  Jesus said His glory was revealed in His death.  Jesus said if anyone serves Him, they must follow Him. Where is Jesus? Is He in our beautiful buildings? Is He sitting comfortably on a padded chair or padded pew?  Hebrews 13:8 reveals where Jesus is and where those who serve Him are to go: Hebrews 13:8-13 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. Servants are not to be led away by teaching which is contrary to Jesus’ Life! He is the same yesterday, and today and forever. His ministry objective never changes. Jesus is all about the Cross. Jesus suffered and died outside the camp, away from the padded pews and the central air. He died outside to camp to bring righteousness to sinful people through His sacrifice. If we are to see righteousness and revival, we must go to Him outside the camp and bear His reproach. If we are to follow Jesus, we must bear the reproach of the ministry of the Cross. D. What then is the Mission, Message and Ministry of the Cross? (How can we experience the power of the Cross that Paul spoke about)  The Cross is the Wisdom of God as opposed to the Wisdom of Man 1. The Cross Reveals the Wisdom & Power of God 1 Corinthians 1:17-21 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power… For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. a. God’ wisdom is revealed in the Cross. Are you facing a difficult decision? Do you really need God’s Wisdom for a particular situation? Do not ask God for wisdom if you are not willing to apply the Cross to your life. He will not give it, for His Wisdom ALWAYS involves the Cross. Unfortunately, just as the Cross is foolishness to those who are not saved, so it can be foolishness to Christians who in their pride refuse to submit their lives to the Cross. That is why Paul adds the qualifier to verse 18: 1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Regeneration is a onetime occurrence, but Life, or Salvation (sozo) is an ongoing, continual process. Many Christians are overcome by the world, (lost in the wilderness) because they fail to submit to the Cross of Christ. Galatians 6:14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. If you are to be continually saved from this wicked world, you must continually submit to the power of the Cross. b. God’s Power is Revealed in the Cross Just look at what happens in the lives of people when this message is preached and taught.  …Murderers become martyrs…  …fighters become lovers…  …hate-mongers become peacemakers…  …drunks become evangelists…  …gang members become church members…  …addicts become soul-winners…  …and the list could go on and on and on! The very power of God is released in those of us who are being saved by the message of the Cross! Our lives, our wisdom, our objectives, our quarrels, our work, our play our families are all to be defined by the message of the Cross! When life is out of sorts, when turmoil and trials are surrounding you…Look to the Cross. There is peace at the Cross. Colossians 1:20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. 2. The Cross Reveals the Folly of Man Just as the crowd taunted Jesus to come down from the Cross, it is not natural for us, even Christians, to submit our lives and possessions and goals and aspirations to the Cross.  Look at this exchange Jesus had with His lead Disciple: Matthew 16:23-24 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  If you are to set your mind on the things of God, you must submit to the Cross.  It is because of the Cross that we can be acceptable to God.  Look at this exchange Jesus had with a prospective disciple: Mark 10:21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”  The Wisdom of Man is opposed to the Cross. Philippians 3:17-19 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. 3. Because of the Cross…we Have Jesus 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied (kenoo) of its power. Kenóō The word kenóō, to make empty, is used metaphorically as meaning to bring to nothing in the sense of not accomplishing what one set out to accomplish as in Rom. 4:14, the faith not accomplishing its purpose. Used as an adj. in reference to the cross of Christ, meaning the cross not accomplishing its purpose, The antithesis of plēróō, to fill. The power of the Cross is what it provides for us - God’s Grace! As we empty ourselves of our pride, we are filled to overfilling with God’s Grace! James 4:6-10 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.  It is the Grace of God that is to Fill us and Lift us UP, not the pride and wisdom of man! We are not to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps! Exalt does not mean you will have glory and honor, as man defines it. We seek not our own, for we seek God’s Wisdom. We seek to die to self and humble ourselves and all that we want before God. When He is given freedom to work in your life, then He will bring His glory to you. Just as Jesus could not enter the Glory of Heaven without being lifted upon the Cross, so too we cannot enjoy the Glory of God upon us unless we humble ourselves to the Cross, and allow Him to lift us up. Here is a picture of this verse: Mourners and penitents lay on the ground, and rolled themselves in the dust. When comforted and pardoned, they arose from the earth, shook themselves from the dust, and clothed themselves in their better garments. God promises to raise these from the dust, when sufficiently humbled . J Vernon McGee paints a more graphic picture: I observed a lifeguard once as he hit a drowning fellow with his fist and knocked him out. The lifeguard explained that the drowning man was struggling and that he could not help him until he gave up. I think sometimes God gives us the fist so that we just give up and let Him take over. So how do we experience the Mission, Message and Ministry of Jesus? How do we experience Jesus?  We must experience the Cross! Philippians 2:1-8 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Every step of Jesus on this planet took Him one step closer to the Cross. His first step was what we call the “self-emptying”. Jesus, Son of God, Creator of this Universe, became nothing. From the insignificant birth, to an insignificant childhood, to a ministry to an insignificant people. He sought no fanfare. He sought no audience with Kings. He sought no titles. He sought no riches. Jesus sought the Cross. (Jim Tompkins) The life of Jesus began with His willing and loving release of privilege and power…those two things that mankind places great importance in. This was the wisdom of God. The world, through its wisdom, cannot understand a wisdom based on sacrifice, love and grace.  How foolish and weak it sounds to “turn the other cheek” in the face of an adversary’s threats.  How foolish and weak it sounds to speak of “loving your enemies.”  What kind of craziness is it to forgive others seventy times seven?  What foolishness it is to speak of “loving your neighbor as yourself”?  How silly it is to want to see yourself as a “servant” rather than as “the one being served.” This is not the way of the world, but it is the way of the Cross! Because of the Cross…We Have Jesus! If you want to experience the grace and love of Jesus to the point that peace reigns in your heart, and His love pours through your life, you must choose whose wisdom you will follow. Your choice is to live life in your pride and your own worldly wisdom, or to empty yourself, and submit everything to the Cross of Christ.  Apathy toward the Cross is pride.  Indifference to the Cross is pride.  Ignorance of the Cross is pride.  Neglect of the Cross is pride Pride will prevent you from experiencing the Grace and Power of the Cross-Life! Followers of Christ experience Jesus “Because of the Cross!”  We have Peace because of the Cross.  We have Unity because of the Cross. Wherever there is disunity, hatred, gossip, slander, you know there is pride, there is selfishness, and the power of the Cross is made useless. Only one thing can be done to lift up and restore the power of the Cross. Death to self and pride by repentance and humbling ourselves to will of Christ and His Cross. 2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Most of us have seen 'Saving Private Ryan'. The captain, played by Tom Hanks, and most of his squad end up fatally wounded after trying to hold a bridge; but at least their mission has been accomplished: Private Ryan is safe. The dying words of Tom Hanks’ character have to be some of the cruelest last words on film. Hardly able to speak, the dying captain whispers to Private Ryan his final command: 'Earn it! Earn it!' In other words, live such a life that gives purpose to these men’s deaths. 'Earn it!' They are cruel words, for they placed upon Private Ryan a terrible, heavy burden. The film then closes with a scene in the present day as the now elderly Ryan kneels at the captain's grave in a Normandy war cemetery. Tears stream down his cheek as he says to his wife, 'Tell me I've been good. Tell me I've lived a good enough life.' "Can you imagine if Jesus' dying words on that cross were, 'You all earn it!' Can you imagine how much greater the burden would be? To earn the death of the one we worship as God! The pressure would be overwhelming. We could never do it. Instead, Jesus cried, 'It is finished.' The message of the cross is simply that we can never earn it; nor do we need to. How do we respond to that? Well, in one sense, we can't. It's too much. In another sense, there is only one way - to love our God with all our heart, mind, strength and soul. In other words, to worship our God. Not to earn God's love, but to revel in his love; not to persuade God to love us, but to delight in his love." (Mark Meynell, "Cross -Examined" IVP, 2001, Leicester, pp.181&182)

Big Belly Compactors Come to Time Square

March 15, 2013 — New York, NY — Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Times Square Alliance, in partnership with BigBelly Solar and Alcoa Foundation, today announced the debut of the largest public space recycling initiative in New York City. The pilot, which will bring 30 new BigBelly solar-powered waste and recycling stations to Times Square, will encourage public space recycling among the more than 500,000 daily visitors to the crossroads of the world. Times Square generates approximately 15,300 pounds or 900 bags of garbage a day – more than any other New York City neighborhood. Alcoa Foundation granted Times Square Alliance $250,000 to purchase the 30 Big Belly units that will be placed throughout Times Square. The Mayor was joined at the announcement in Times Square by Sanitation Commissioner John J. Doherty, Alcoa Chairman and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld, Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins and BigBelly CEO Jim Norrod.

Tell Your Friends! The Concert Film! Trailer

This is the story of indie comedy in New York City; like classic rock films 'Woodstock' and 'The Last Waltz,' it tells the story of not just a show, but a scene--a generation of comedians who honed their craft in the bars, rock clubs, and little black box theatres outside the mainstream comedy club circuit.
